Advantages and Disadvantages of using technology in your child's learning

Advantages of Technology in Literacy:
1.     People use technology anywhere and everywhere. In education, technology plays an important role
to support students learning as technology can help improve research capabilities efficiently.
2.   In Australia, there are many bilingual families, which shows that children learn language, history
and popular culture through technology by exploring (Arthur, Ashton, and Beecher, 2014).
3.     For students, they can learn from games, as Furió, Juan, Seguí, & Vivó (2015) explain that phone
games compare with traditional class, and can inspire children’s interest to learn, underline their
motivation and increase their memory and knowledge.
4.     Technology liberates children from heavy books and build up independent learning abilities by
navigating and researching online pages and apps. (Mir 2016).
5.     Teachers can use technological devices to help children improve their literacy through singing songs
or watching videos online (Lu, Ottenbreit-Leftwich, Ding, and Glazewski, 2017).
6.     TV can promote speaking and imitation in young children.
7.     Advanced technology, such as artificial intelligence and augmented reality, engage real life into
information and technology. These kinds of tools are easy to manipulate and attract children’s attention,
whilst also builds their critical thinking skills.

Disadvantages of Technology in Literacy:
1.     It can disconnect children from face-to-face relationships and communication. Too much use of
technology reduces the opportunity for children to interact and socially connect and create bonds with
people around them.
2.     The presence of technology can be distracting to students. When children play video games, they can
find themselves reacting with addiction-like behaviours and creates over-stimulating nature.
3.     Some technologies could replace the teacher in some classrooms. With today’s technological
advancements, some software or apps can become the teacher. This makes the teacher become an observer
rather than a hands-on and supportive model to the child.
4.     Excessive use of technology can lead to poor health problems. It can lead to a lifestyle that is more
sedentary, and lead to issues such as back pain, neck pain, feelings of tiredness, blurred vision, and problems
to maintain focus.
5.   It can make it easier to cheat. Technology allows for communication between people.
However, the ease of communication also makes cheating more likely. All it takes is a single group email
broadcast or message to share the answers to a quiz or test.
